About me:

A picture of me

My name is Olga Velez, and I'm a student at the University of Florida. I am completing my journalism major and history minor this spring. I was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to Florida when I was a year old. Between Houston and Florida, I have lived in the United States my whole life. I started writing articles when I attended Florida International University from the summer of 2008 until the summer of 2009.

When I first started freelancing for the university's newspaper over the summer, it was just something to do for fun. Once I handed in my first article, I was hooked and already on the lookout for another assignment and another story to tell. By the start of the fall semester, I was employed at the Beacon as a staff writer for the opinion and news sections. When I first transferred to the University of Florida, I also freelanced for the metro section of the Alligator from the fall of 2009 until the spring of 2010.

My hobbies include traveling, reading, cooking and parasailing. I am also interested in studying law, and I'm considering starting law school next fall. This semester, I am an event chair for the Pre-Legal Honor Society at the University of Florida. The event that I am hosting is called Law in the Swamp, and in this event, we bring together law school admissions representatives, lawyers and law school students to talk to pre-law students about any questions they may have concerning the law school admissions process.

Other than that, I enjoy going to the movies and spending time with my family and close friends. The first goal that I have for this website is to start an online presence for myself where I can share my writing and stories. The second goal is to get an A on my first assignment for my Communications on the Internet course at the University of Florida. If you have any questions or would like more information about anything that I have posted, feel free to e-mail me.
