Cinema Verde

Cinema Verde is a 10-day festival also know as the Gainesville Environment Film and Arts Festival that features films, art events, eco-tours, an Eco Fair for "green" products & services, and much more, all with the aim of educating the community about environmental issues.

To make all of this happen, it's mostly up to a core group of Gainesville environmentalists headed by Trish Riley, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Living and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Greening Your Business. But these people need help and that is where we interns come in.

I attended the first film festival last year as a blogger for The Fine Print and was really impressed with the grit of the people running the show who just decided to get together and make it happen. This year, I decided I wanted to lend a hand.

To be honest, I just started recycling last year, probably as a result of the green influence in Gainesville, but the more I found out about environmental issues and their solutions, the more I wanted to get involved.

To me, changing unsustainable habits really doesn't have to be and shouldn't be extremist or fringe phenomena. And it starts with education which is where the films really go a long way in raising awareness of specific and general issues.
