Amnesty International: Fighting Globally for Human Rights
Amnesty International (AI) is a non-profit organization that works
towards freeing political prisoners, those also known as "prisoners of conscience."
One of the most painful observations of my travels was the level of human rights
abuse that occurs in many South American countries. However, human rights abuses
don't stop there, they are a global plague. Men, women, and frequently children
are imprisoned and brutally tortured simply because of their own, or sometimes their family members' political or religious
beliefs. Often times, these political prisoners are tortured to death or left in solitary confinement
for years. Members of Amnesty International are fighting to end such cruelty, and do
so through letter writing to government officials. Amnesty International also has a global campaign
to Abolish the Death Penalty as a form of cruel and punishment. If you are interested in knowing more
