The gap between rich and poor in Guatemala is wide. It's a land without a middle class. Thirty percent of its 13,000,000 inhabitants live below the poverty line, the amount it takes to sustain yourself daily.

Zacapa is not a very populous region. It sits at the base of the Sierra del Merendon mountains in the Southeast part of the country. Up in the mountains, people are very poor. Because of deeply entrenched "machismo" ideals, the men eat first, then the woman. Because of this, many go days without food on a regular basis.
