University of Florida Gospel Choir

University of Florida Gospel Choir Objectives

The University of Florida Gospel Choir is a cultural and educational organization who is trying to present to the university and the public a legitimate definition of Gospel music. The objectives of the choir will be to provide a well-organized program of Gospel music on university campuses; to stimulate interest in vocal Gospel music on university campuses and throughout the United States to discover, innovate, and advance the total Gospel experience; and to present the University of Florida to the public, promoting it's best interests in a unique, dynamic and provocative dimension.

The following is a letter that I wrote to apply for my current position in the choir, business manager. My basic duties are to make contracts for various concert engagements that we do on campus, throughout the city, the state of Florida, and the places we perform at during spring tour, and serve as the annual spring tour manager. This requires setting up the engagements, making travel and hotel accomodations, and setting the overall tour itenerary.

"Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him"

Deuteronomy 13:4

I only felt it appropriate to begin this application letter for the Business Manager position with a word or scripture that I felt was not only relevant to the position, but is a true expression of how I feel about the duties of this position.

In the verse there is an emphasis on serving him and thus being obedient to God's word. It is through my experiences in the University Gospel Choir that I have for the first time in my life realized that I actually want to serve him and this is the way I know that I can do it.

The choir has furthered my grace in God and has given me so much, that I deem it necessary to give back through my servitude as the choir's business manager.

In preparation for the position, I have read and fully understand the duties of the Business Manager position. I have also regularly attended executive board meetings since January, thus acquiring a working knowledge of how this position fits into the structure of the choir. I have also had informal conferences with the current Business Manager, asking questions about the position and gaining insight about the "hands-on" experience of the position.

There are several reasons why I feel that I am qualified for the position. To begin, my academic background provides a strong foundation for fulfilling the assigned duties of the position. As a public relations major, I have experience in special-events planning, a detailed process that involves quick decision-making and problem solving skills to ensure the success of the program or event. In applying this knowledge to the Business Manager position, I would make initial contact(s)for choir engagements, check out the engagement location to ensure the highest possible comfort for the choir, musicians, and its instruments, and make accommodations to ensure the choir arrives in a timely and orderly fashion to engagements.

Secondly, I have served in several leadership roles that have furthered my knowledge in dealing with diverse people. I served as secretary for the FAMU chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. I also served as a resident assistant for two years in which I created and implemented student educational programs and dealt with various issues involving student counseling.

I also believe that I am qualified for this position is because I am well-rounded person. During my senior FAMU, I simultaneously served as a resident assistant, chapter secretary, and an intern while carrying a 16 credit hour load (while remaining on the Dean's list). By being a good time and stress manager, I am able to successfully complete multiple tasks at the same time.

Finally, I believe I am qualified for the Business Manager position because I am willing to learn. I sincerely believe that this position will promote growth not only academically an career wise, but also spiritually as well. Although the position is demanding and challenging, I know that it will be a rewarding position that will further my growth in grace.
