I started writing in the field in Melbourne around 2007, while freelancing at Florida Today. Covering community sports stories for the paper, I was able to see various parts of the county, and learn more about people, such as a tennis story I did involving an instructor teaching older citizens about the game she loved so much. I would also cover youth sports, which was rewarding as it was a joy to see the excitement on the kids and parents faces. Eventually I would move on to more stories, and once my time interning was over, I began freelancing for the company, covering high school football.

Covering high school football was a very rewarding experience, as it gave me the opportunity to hone my craft on something I want to do directly, sports reporting. It was extremely difficult, however, as I had to take down everything, and would sometimes be hindered by Mother Nature. One game proved to be extremely difficult, as my notebook was saturated by the rain. Barely able to read my stats, I was able to make it through and finish the story.

Some of my favorite places to cover were Florida Air Academy and Melbourne High. The help and enthusiasm I got from the staff there was vital in my success.
