My favorite things

I have always been an opinionated person and while I am not obstinate, I do hold very strong convictions. I greatly enjoy music and it has always been a big part of my life. When I was younger, my family would take long road trips and my mom would educate my brothers and I on the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and many other artists from the 1960s and 70s. I would say that this probably influenced my love for music and unique and refined music taste. My favorite band is Modest Mouse, an alternative band from Washington that plays many of my favorite songs. But, a different artist plays my all-time favorite song. Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen has stuck with me since hearing it as a child. The song has presented itself to me in many different ways, evoking different underlying messages every time I hear it.

Aside from my thoughts on music, I also really enjoy movies. My favorite movie is “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” a non-linear love story directed by Michel Gondry. Apart from being one of my favorite story lines, the movie has my favorite actress in it, Kate Winslet. The meandering storyline in Eternal Sunshine is very similar to my favorite types of books: stream of conscious. Anything from some sort of first person, interior monologue tends to catch my attention. I especially like William Faulkner’s use of it in “The Sound and the Fury,” a story about an aristocratic family living in the Deep South during the early 1900s.

On a completely unrelated note, my favorite season is fall, even though the key ingredient (avocados) to my favorite food (guacamole) isn’t in season. My ideal day would be sitting on my porch when the weather is nice with a bowl of guacamole, a good book and my headphones on.
