About Me: A Brief Biography

About Me Caitlin E. O'Conner is currently a senior at the University of Florida seeking dual degrees in journalism and English with a graduation date in December 2011. She graduated from Florida State College at Jacksonville and a home education program simultaneously in 2009 with a concurrent high school diploma and associate of arts degree with high honors.

As a journalist, Caitlin has worked for The Wall Street Journal as an editing intern, the Jacksonville Business Journal as a newsroom intern and in various positions for The Independent Florida Alligator, the largest student-run newspaper in the United States. A complete list of her work experience can be found here.

Caitlin has been writing since age 12 and editing since age 15, when she realized in a college composition class that many in the world were desperately in need of help when it came to grammar. She subsequently stumbled into journalism as a 17-year-old college junior and was introduced to the Associated Press Stylebook, a book with which she fell in love (although her subsequent relationship with the AP stylebook showed her its shortcomings, such as the four errors she found in the 2010 stylebook alone).

As a literature student, Caitlin has enjoyed studying colonialism, exoticism, postcolonialism and nationalism, and she can often be found applying these frames of reference to film, television and contemporary works, much to the chagrin of her friends and family. She particularly enjoys applying them to her favorite Bollywood films. Some of Caitlin's favorite writers include Rudyard Kipling, Jane Austen, C.S. Lewis and Kathy Tyers.

Bass FishingAn undeniable Southern girl through and through, Caitlin is an avid bluegrass fan, is known for her cowboy boots and old Chevy truck, loves to fish and calls rodeo her favorite sport (though SEC football is a close second). She also enjoys genealogy and Southern history. The second-oldest of six children, Caitlin was born and raised in Nassau County, Fla., and is a sixth-generation native of Yulee, Fla.
