I’m a writer because my mother read the Bible.

When I was a child, I’d walk by her room at night, look inside, and see her lying in bed, her head propped against the bed frame, rereading the Bible. She read it nightly. She annotated it, underlined it, highlighted it. She kept the same Bible for decades, with its pages worn and yellow but no pages torn or ripped. She read it more than pastors do. She threw herself completely to words on a paper. I wanted to write to capture souls, like the Bible captured hers.
