Sitting Halfway Down, With James Wilkey Me, goofing around with a NERF gun

My Interests

My interests are many and unique. By this I mean that they are fairly general and pretty average. Now that you're familiar with my all time favorite hobby, being obnoxiously sarcastic, let's move on to the others.

I love movies. Ever since I was a kid I was obsessed with movies. I can usually find something to like in any movie, though that's not the same as loving every movie. I love to watch them, study them, analyze them and write about them. As a child, the only real dream that I had was to be a film maker, film critic or something filmy.

At the top of my long list of favorite movies are "The Empire Strikes Back," "Doctor Zhivago," "Lawrence of Arabia," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "There Will Be Blood," and "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly."

On the other side of the coin, the movies that are so bad that I had to own them to show other people how bad they are include "Dragon Wars," "Resident Evil: Extinction," and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation."

The latter two led me to formulate the hypothesis that any movie following the formula "Franchise Name: Single word with negative connotation and/or denotation" must be bad. For example: "Star Trek: Nemesis" is bad, while "Star Trek: First Contact," which has two non-negative words, is good.

My love of books trails my fondness for film very closely. In fact, they're almost the same thing to me, as I tend to visualize what I'm reading. Still, from a story telling perspective, I prefer a book's ability to present the clockwork of its characters.

If I wasn't going to be a filmaker, the younger version of myself essentially demanded that I become an author. I still hope to pull this off at some point, though I'm studying journalism to, as the hackneyed phrase goes, pay the bills.

My favorite book is "Angela's Ashes," Frank McCourt's fantastic and frequently funny memoir about his impoverished childhood in the lanes of Limerick, Ireland. I also love his follow-up novels "Tis'" and "Teacher Man."

Shocking as it may seem, I love to write. I'm one of those people who carries around a pretentious little Moleskin notebook to write down any stray thought. I write random little stream-of-consciousness journal entries, poetry, short stories, script ideas and whatever else.

I also enjoy sketching, but I group this with writing as I only sketch while writing. I also don't draw well enough to make this its own category.

Music and Games

Me, playing Nintendo Wii

So, this is what I do if I'm not doing any of the above. Personally, I'm a Nintendo-phile. I respect the superior technological ability of other systems, but the only games I really play tend to be made by Nintendo. Besides, if a game comes out on another system and I really want to play it, I can probably get my fix from somewhere.

I used to play a lot of games and would listen to very little music, but the two have switched places in recent years. This switch is mostly due to my ability to work and listen to music at the same time. It is, after all, much harder to work and play games.

As a person who hates it when people blast their music, I rarely play music without headphones, but if you ever see me bobbing my head in some sad attempt to keep rhythm then I'm probably listening to the Beatles, the Cold War Kids, the Fratellis, Nirvana, the Arctic Monkeys, Nine Inch Nails, or some kind of musical. I bet you didn't see that last one coming, did you?
