San Diego, CA

This summer I went to California for the first time. I went to visit my best friend Hannah who was living there for the summer. I discovered that San Diego has a lot more to offer than just great weather.

This is a picture of me and Hannah after our balloon ride.

Hot Air Balloon ride

The highlight of my trip was a sunrise hot air balloon ride through California's wine country. The take-off point was about 30 minute drive north of San Diego in Temecula Valley Wine Country. The experience was well worth waking up at 4 a.m. and the drive. Hannah, her dad and I took a 30 minute flight over the vineyards and valleys of Southern California. We hovered so close over the vines that we could see the grapes. I was surprised to see people of all ages on the flight. It was the three of us, two older couples and the pilot. We landed safetly and even received certificates for taking our first flight. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

Sea World

We went to Sea World which is a park that featurues marine animal exhibits and shows. My favorite show of the day was the dolphin show call "Dolphin Discovery." The park also has a few water rides. I went with Hannah and our friend Anna. When we arrived at the park we went straight to the "Journey to Atlantis" ride to try and beat the crowd. The shows go throughout the day and the park closes each night with a fireworks display.

The San Diego Zoo

Just before my trip to California I visted the National Zoo in Washington D.C. I was surprised to find that the San Diego Zoo was a million times more impressive. I could have spent all day there. We decided to go in the late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. We started our visit with a bus tour of the park. This gave us a brief view of the park as a whole and helped us decide which exhibits we really wanted to visit. We ate dinner with a group of Hannah's co-workers in a restaurant called "Albert's." The restaurant is actually in a treehouse right by the gorilla exhibit. One of my favorite parts of the visit was the polor bear exhibit. We ended up staying at the park until it closed.

The Phantom of the Opera

We were able to get tickets to the opening night of The Phantom of the Opera at the San Diego Civic Theatre. This was a great way to spend a relaxing evening in the city.

La Jolla

La Jolla is a town just north of San Diego. It has good shopping and cute restaurants. An interesting thing about this area is the Sea Lions that lie on the cliffs in the afternoons. Groups of people go out to the beach to watch the animals bask in the sun.
