The University of Florida was founded in 1853 and moved to its current Gainesville campus in 1906. It is Florida's flagship university and the 13th-ranked university in the nation.
J. Bernard Machen is the University's president. Student enrollment is more than 50,000. The University campus is situated in the heart of Gainesville and is made up of more than 900 buildings.
UF's athletics attracted national attention last year after winning three championships in a row (Basketball, Football, Basketball).
UF's Department of Journalism was founded in 1925 and held classes in Language Hall. The Department was made a school in the 1940's, and a college in the 1960s.
The College of Journalism and Communications met under the stadium through the 1970's. Weimer Hall was completed in 1980 and named for Rae O. Weimer, the first Dean of the College.
Two TV stations and four radio stations are operated out of the building. The College's Interactive Media Lab is home to the first Web site in the country for a Journalism school.
