The demise of Star Trek
This story was published on March 5, 2005, during my Gainesville Sun internship. I wrote it while taking a course load of 12 hours and with a week-long deadline.
I wrote hard news for The Daily Commercial, covering town and school board meetings. For this piece, I attended the 7 p.m. meeting and had to have my article in by 9:30 p.m. I made the deadline and experienced my first reporter's adrenaline rush.
This was quite an interesting piece to write. I wrote a first-person story of how to get a tan in Ocala without the sun. My editors wanted to focus on a new service brought to Ocala: The Mystic Tan. The story included a full-page, before-and-after photo -- a quite embarrassing one -- of me.
For the Star-Banner internship, I wrote between three and six feature-length stories a week. I had a two day timeframe to work on this piece, while also working on my other stories.
