Summer Camp Memories

Kids at the Beach

While I have learned many real-world lessons through my experiences as an intern with Sacred Heart Health System, some of the most valuable knowledge and skills I have learned have come from my work with children at the City of Gulf Breeze Summer Camp.

Background on the Camp

The City of Gulf Breeze Summer Camp is operated all summer long and is held at the South Santa Rosa Recreation Center in Gulf Breeze. The camp is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Children ages 6-12 are allowed to participate and are split up into groups according to age. Though the number varies from day to day, there are an average of 80 children attending per week.

My Duties

As a camp counselor, I was in charge of overseeing the safety and well-being of my individual group of campers. I played games with them, such as kickball and softball, led scavenger hunts, acted as a lifeguard at the beach, and accompanied them on field trips to the movies, zoo and skating rink.

Within my group, I was responsible for leading all activities, mediating disputes between campers, enacting discipline when necessary and ensuring that everyone had fun in a safe and secure environment.

What I've Learned

While working as a camp counselor, I have learned the value of being true to oneself and having fun with one's job. I've learned the importance of listening to everyone's ideas, no matter how silly or absurd they may seem at first and to give everyone a chance. I've also learned to take nothing for granted and that even little things can make a difference in someone's life. Most of all, I've learned the virtue of patience and how to see the world as a larger picture.
