Visions of a Parson

Sitting by the window in his room,
the stalwart parson of the parish,
who’d spent his whole career
expounding on the emblem of a fish
to calm his flock’s astringent fears,
was fascinated only by the moon.

Years of theology
now governed his body and mind
more than earth’s natural laws,
and yet he struggled to find,
as he looked through a dense fog,
how the moon preserved its purity

‘Though the spirit is immersed
in the word of God ’, he mulled
‘time ravages its presence.
But crescent, half, or full,
the moon’s unembellished essence
will never be perverse.’
