The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most beautiful, diverse habitats in the world. It is home to more than 2,200 species. I never realized how lucky I was to grow up next to it until I moved away to college. Now I look forward to spending a day on the water or watching the spectacular sunsets at night.
I am a sixth generation native Floridian. My ancestors fished these waters and saw these sunsets hundreds of years ago. This makes me realize how important it is to protect this unique environment. There are a few programs devoted to this cause, such as The National Estuary Program and The Florida Oceanographic Society .
