Brief History of Hanjun Ko

This page is devoted to my personal information. This section includes information about my life, my academic experience, and my professional experience.

My Life

I was born and grew up in Seoul, Korea. I spent most of my life in Seoul before I came to the U.S. to get a Master's Degree and Ph.D.
I was born in 1969, which means that I have lived through five different decades so far (I feel like I'm very old...). I am the youngest of three siblings.
Just before the new millennium, I got married to my wife, Minjung, on December 28th. She just gave birth to our first baby a month ago (February 10th). To see some pictures of my family and myself, please go to my Photos page .

My Academic Experience

I am currently a doctoral student in advertising at the University of Florida. I received my Master's Degree in advertising from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995. Before coming to the United States for graduate study, I got my Bachelor of Arts degree in German language and literature at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea.
Under the doctoral program, I worked as a teaching assistant for several undergraduate media planning courses taught by Dr. Kent Lancaster. Currently, I am working as a research assistant for Dr. Marilyn Roberts.
My areas of research include advertising effectiveness, online marketing, and international advertising. I am currently working on my dissertation, in which the major focus will be global interactive advertising based on cultural differences in various global markets. Hopefully, I plan to finish my Ph. D. in the summer of 2002.

My Professional Experience

After graduation from the University of Texas at Austin, I worked for Oricom, Inc., one of the largest advertising agencies in Korea, as a marketing planner from 1995 through 1999. While working in the practical field of the advertising industry, I accumulated a reservoir of knowledge and experience in this still-growing field of marketing communication. Specifically, I conducted numerous market and consumer research projects as a part of clients' overall communication plans.
Thanks to the good reputation of the agency I worked for, I had numerous good opportunities to meet and become acquainted with a number of famous domestic and foreign clients, such as Anheuser Busch, Coca-Cola, KFC, 3M, and the Korean Baseball Organization.
Among these, my major client in the agency was Anheuser-Busch Asia, Inc. Therefore, I conducted several quantitative and qualitative research projects to analyze the performances of Budweiser in the Korean beer market, to find out the consumers' attitude toward Budweiser and its competitive brands, and to gather basic data for improving various marketing activities of Budweiser.
