German

The German language is spoken primarily in Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland. It and French were the primary languages that formed English. Many people think German is a hard language to learn; however, once you learn the rules it can be quite easy. You can take classes, learn online or with books or best of all live in the country for a while. My interest is German syntax.

You can check out the German newspaper the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung.

Italian

The Italian language is spoken primarily in Italy and parts of Switzerland. It has influenced the English vocabulary indirectly through its Latin origin and directly through the borrowing of words, particularly food. Many people think Italian is easy to learn because it is a romance language like Spanish; however, many Italians say it is quite difficult due to the complexities in grammar as you go further in your studies. I think Italian is more difficult than German because of the less structure. You can take classes, learn online or with books or best of all live in the country for a while. My interest is Italian morphology.

You can check out Italy's newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Linguistics

Linguistics is the scientific study of human natural language. It is concerned with breaking down the broad questions about the nature of language into smaller questions. It should not be assumed that if someone is a linguist, they can speak many languages. A linguist may only speak one language. Linguistics is the science of language. It is broken up into 5 main categories:

  • Morphology --the study of the structure of words.
  • Phonetics --the study of speech sounds.
  • Phonology--the study of sound structure.
  • Syntax --the study of sentence structure.
  • Semantics--the study of meaning and denotation.
