A Little Background

First Thing's First

While I'd like to consider myself an artist, I should start off by pointing out that I am far from an expert on any element of art. Though I have dabbled in several different artistic fields, I am still attempting to narrow down my true passion (hopefully into somewhat of a career path). The one thing I know for sure: any freedom of expression, whether through music, film, or paper, is the purest form of art, and is of great interest to me, Matthew Schatzel. But who on earth am I? Let me tell you...

I was born in the sunny city of St. Petersburg, Florida, or "the Burg," as I've lovingly come to call it, on December 16, 1985. It was there that I spent the first 18 years of my life with my family. Upon leaving the nest, I moved to Gainesville, Florida, which I am now happy to call my swampy home-away-from-home. My heart and soul, however, will always be back in the Burg.

Family and Friends

The product of a loving and supportive family, I learned at an early age the value of trust, openness and selflessness in any relationship. Without the guidance and care of my parents, Peter and Joan, I would not be where I am today.

They still reside in St. Pete with my two Westie puppies, my pride and joy, Toby and Abby. I also have two sisters who have been an integral part of my growth. My older sister Madeline graduated from the University of Florida in 2004 and is going into accounting, and my younger sister Margaret is currently enrolled in the University of Miami.

Over the course of high school, I was fortunate enough to forge several lifelong friendships. I'll be the first to tell anybody about my undying love and devotion to my friends, as well as my beautiful girlfriend Sara. Andy, G-Bo, Salley, Jeff, Keyur, Quigley, Raspo, Feld, Rosie, Jenn and Laura, my crew, are more than just friends to me. They are my heroes, my role models and my life support.

Education and Work

After nine years of Catholic schooling at Holy Family and St. Raphael's, I embarked on a grueling, rigorous journey through four years of the International Baccalaureate program at St. Petersburg High School (Go Green Devils!). Despite several sleepless nights and near panic attacks, I graduated with my IB diploma in 2004, and enrolled at the University of Florida, where I am currently a third-year journalism major.

Over of the course of my education, I have also worked several part time jobs. These include cashier and stock associate at Mickey's Snell Isle Market (St. Pete), delivery driver at Pizza Hut (Gainesville), and currently, logistics associate and door-to-floor captain at Old Navy (Gainesville and Tampa).
