Welcome to the Website for the Florida Chapters of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.!
Lambda Theta Alpha takes much pride in being the FIRST Latin sorority in the Nation. Founded in 1975 by 17 innovating founding mothers who wanted to create a support system for woman of all color. Over 25 years later their vision of a sisterhood based on Unity, Love, and Respect has grown to include 72 chapters all across the United States and Puerto Rico.
Florida's history of Lambda Theta Alpha started in 1994 when a group of Ladies at the University of Florida discussed the need to find an organization that would cater to the needs of Latina woman on the UF campus. In the Spring of 1996 9 Ladies ventured into unchartered waters to establish the FIRST chapter of a Latin Sorority in the South! On March 17th 1996 the "Notorious Chi Chapter" at the University of Florida was established. The 9 ladies faced a difficult time because Latin sororities were typically based in the northern tri-state area of New York, New Jersey & Conneticut.Amongst all the skeptism and doubt these ladies worked fervently to make a name for Lambda Theta Alpha, not only on the UF campus but in the South.
By the Spring of 1998 their efforts paid off.The Ladies of Chi Chapter worked closely with a group of interested ladies at the University of South Florida-Tampa. In April 1998 Beta Gamma Chapter--"Survivors of the Finest" was established. The two chapters from the beginning established a tight relationship because they were the only two chapters of LTA based in the South at the time. But the interest for LTA did not end at USF.
During the Summer of 1997 a group of women convened at the University of Central Florida- Orlando. Their intention was to bring a sorority to campus that would cater to the need of all minority woman. They felt Lambda Theta Alpha was what they were looking for in a sisterhood. In April 1999, the Blaaazin' Beta Theta Chapter was established by 15 Ladies.
LTA's growth would travel further down south in the Fall of 2000 as the "Intellegent, Sophisticated and Independent- Skies The Limit Beta Sigma Chapter was formed at the University of Miami. Beta Sigma's establishment in the South Florida area helped create the receptive environment to form Gamma Delta Chapter at Nova South Eastern University & in the Spring of 2002 Gamma Iota chapter at Florida Atlantic University.
Further up north in the state in the Spring of 2001 10 Ladies worked hard to establish the Illuminating and Electrifying Gamma Epsilon Chapter at Florida State University- Tallahasee. The Ladies of this Chapter are now within driving distance to one of LTA's newest chapter's - The Glamarous Gamma Nu chapter of Emory University, Georgia. Gamma Nu is the first chapter of a Latin sorority in the State of Georgia, thus the sisters of Florida have taken this new chapter under it's wings. Although they live in another state these ladies are always willing to troop it down to Florida to support other chapter's events.
