Sports I Play and Watch

Volleyball isn't a sport I play often, but beach volleyball is fun once in awhile. Here, I am playing volleyball on Ft. Myers Beach with Joe Jennings, Dan and Scott

One of the great things about my parents' house is the tennis court in the backyard. I am one of the few people lucky enough to have grown up with a tennis court in my yard. Also, both of my parents have been USTA certified tennis pros at some point.

I have learned to love the game of tennis, and am pretty good at it. While it is not my favorite sport, I have learned to really appreciate my ability to play tennis at a high level for a couple of reasons. First, not many people can do it. It is a somewhat unique skill. Everyone can play touch football or basketball, but even some of the world's most gifted athletes look entirely uncoordinated with a tennis racquet in their hands. Secondly, tennis is a truer test of all types of athletic ability than any other sport, in my opinion.

Tennis combines speed, quickness, agility, power, coordination, endurance and, most importantly, mental ability. Tennis is truly a thinking man's game, but the thinking must be done in the middle of a point. I much prefer playing tennis to watching it, but I do appreciate what professional tennis players do. They are wildly gifted.

After coming up to UF, I don't play basketball as much as I used to or would like to. Playing a competitive, clean game of basketball with others who play it the right way is one of my favorite things to do. I don't have the physical attributes one would expect a good basketball player to have: size and speed. Even without those gifts, I surprise people who have never seen me play with my shooting ability. Basketball is a strenuous sport that involves skill and coordination, which is why I love it so much. Interestingly, I don't like watching basketball very much unless Billy Donovan's Gators are playing. It is a sport that is much more fun to play than it is to watch.

The one sport almost as fun to watch as it is to play is the king of spectator sports: football. It honestly pains me to miss a Gator football game, as the pictures of me at my sister's wedding (during the Kentucky game) would attest. Football at almost every level evokes passion, which makes it such a great game. It is a way of life on autumn afternoons. I have never played organized football, but I do enjoy playing pickup games. Unfortunately, my brothers and cousin have overtaken me in a major way in both speed and size. I can compete with them in tennis and basketball, but they sort of embarrass me in football.

I have been to countless Gator football games, but never to an NFL game. I am also getting newspaper experience covering the Trenton (Fla.) High School football team for the Gilchrist County Journal. It is a dream of mine to cover either college or high school football as a career.
