La Rue de la Republique

La Rue de la Republique

Avignon is located in the South of France. La Rue de la Republique, depicted here, is the main thoroughfare into the city. It is decorated colorfully for the theater festival, Festival d'Avignon, which is held each summer. Hundreds of productions come to Avignon from all over France. Some have an audience of two, and others have hundreds and are staged in the Palais de Papes.

Palais de Papes

Palais de Papes (Papal Palace) is the focal point of the city. The Roman influence is obvious in the architecture and design of the buildings. A wall completely surrounds the city, and the roads are barely wide enough for vehicles.

The Pont d'Avignon is also a very famous part of Avignon's history. Supposedly it wasn't strong enough and was never finished after many attempts. "Sur le Pont d'Avignon" is a popular song often heard in French classes.
