Camping on the North Barnard Islands

North Barnard Islands

Summer 2002, my brother, Ian, and I did a wilderness tour in Cairns, Australia. Our first leg, we sea kayaked over King's Reef to the North Barnard Islands where we camped on two different islands.

Not bad for my first camping experience!

Mount Bertle Frere Rainforest

Mt. Bertle Frere Rainforest

We hiked 16 miles in the Mt. Bertle Frere Rainforest. We slept in hammocks, and it would have been perfect if it wasn't raining, muddy and leech-infested!

Leeches were everywhere, including under our tour guide's eyelid! I still have nightmares.

Our tour also included a canoe trip through the rainforest, but it was after our hike. We decided to skip it and go to the zoo to play with fuzzy koalas, wombats and crocodiles. Our last leg of the trip was a day on the Great Barrier Reef. It was the livliest and most colorful reef I have ever seen. It definitely lived up to its reputation.
