A Special Part of Who I Am

The photo to the left is very important to me. In Summer 2001, I traveled thousands of miles to meet the woman who gave me up for adoption 21 years ago. The woman was my birth mother, Cathy Merritt. After all those years of questioning who I was and where I came from, my questions were answered.

I had registered with an on-line adoption service that specialized in reuniting adopted children with their birth parents. Not even a day later, the agency contacted me and told me they had a possible match. Two days later, I spoke to Cathy's ex-husband and a week later, I was flying to Carson City, Nevada to meet her.

She and I have become close friends since the day we met. The best thing about meeting her was that I found out I have two half brothers, John and Steven. Now I have two mothers and four brothers.

However, my situation is rare. Many adoption searches do not end up with a happy reunion. I feel very blessed to have the people I do in my life. I cannot thank my friends and family enough for all the support and love they have given me this past year. I could not have made it through the hard times without them. Thank you!

Being adopted is special. Reflecting back on my experience, I can honestly say I know who I am now. Because of the friends and family that have influenced me growing up, I am a product of that. For some people, it can take a lifetime to figure out who they are, but I have been lucky enough to know now who I am and what I want to accomplish. I never knew seven months ago that I would be in this mindset. It is amazing how things change.
