The 1997 Season

Author Bio

In 1997 Florida began the season ranked #2 in the nation and it began to look as though Florida could have another magical season on their hands. This dream soon came to an end as the 5-0 Gators entered "Death Valley" to take on the LSU Tigers. LSU upset the #1 ranked Gators by a score of 28-21. Then Florida seemed to be back on track after a solid win over Auburn, but the Gators faced another setback the next week when Georgia beat them for the first time in eight tries. With two SEC losses Florida was eliminated from any hope of playing for the SEC title. But the season was not a total loss for Gator fans, oh no, far from it. With the #1 FSU Seminoles coming into Gainesville this was Florida's chance to play spoiler. The Gators handed the Seminoles a 32-29 upset and knocked them out of the National Championship picture.
