Personal Web site requirements
The requirements for your personal Web site project are simple:
- Have at least four separate Web pages and 500 words of content. The content of your pages, in total, must add up to at least 500 words.
- The suggested content is: a home page, a hobbies page, a travel page and a travel resources page. You are encouraged to include your resume, but that does not count as one of the four required pages. If you wish to deviate from this suggested content, we're open to that. Discuss it with your lab instructor.
- Include at least one graphic or photo that you create or scan. That means you must shoot a digital picture, scan in a photograph, draw a picture and scan it, or create some other type of digital artwork. (Copying someone else's digital picture and including it is not adequate to meet this requirement.)
- Include at least one "internal" link and at least one "external" link. That means you must have at least one hypertext link to a document that is part of your personal site and at least one link to a site that exists elsewhere on the Web.
- Include a functional "mailto" link. Every Web presentation, whether for this project or any other, should identify the author and include a contact or "mailto" link. This is a link that tells a visitor who authored the site and enables the visitor to send e-mail to that author.
- Write all the HTML and CSS yourself. You may not use software packages that create HTML for you such as Dreamweaver, Homesite or Microsoft Word (heaven forbid!).
- Use CSS for design. Separate the presentation from the content/structure. No deprecated HTML tags are allowed.
- Burn it to a CD-ROM or flash drive. Your disk will be returned to you, but It's wise to make a copy for yourself beforehand in case of loss or damage. CDs are preferred but flash drives will be accepted. We are not responsible for loss or damage.
- Lastly, review and follow the Academic Honesty standards for this course particularly as they relate to plagiarism, intellectual property and copyright.
Important Note: Your work will be put on the Web, and it will remain there for the foreseeable future. That means your site will be accessible to the general public on the World Wide Web and likely will be indexed by search engines within a few days or weeks. Therefore, you should not include personal information that you do not want others to see or know about.
Grading:
Your home pages will be graded on the following criteria. Each is worth up to 20 points:
- Content: Is it interesting, well written, well spelled, well punctuated, etc.?
- Design: Is it attractive, easy on the eyes and does the design fit the topic?
- Navigation: Is it simple to make one's way through the pages without getting lost
- Code: Did you use CSS and is your HTML clean and consistent?
- Creativity/innovation: Is it fun, slick, unique, creative, artistic, useful, humorous and/or whatever? Does it make use of the features of the Web? Does it incorporate any advanced HTML features such as tables or CSS-based layout?
- (Usability is a factor in each category but is especially important in design, navigation and code.)
