A Woman's Touch

Tattooing is becoming more popular and acceptable everyday, and female tattoo artists are leading the way. Most female tattoo artists have backgrounds in art and drawing, which often leads artists to gain respect in the field of tattooing. “Many people just seem to feel more at ease with women tattoo artists,” according to Margaret Lawson of Big City Tattoo III. Female tattoo artists are among the fastest growing group for body modification fields.

Margaret Lawson is the one female tattoo artist at Big City Tattoo III in Jacksonville, Florida. Lawson has been tattooing for over ten years. “I did some of the tattoos on my arm myself, and I believe going on the arms shows dedication as an artist and it shows off your work,” said Lawson.

Kaki Cannon began tattooing nearly five and a half years ago. Cannon currently works at the main Inksmith and Rogers Tattoo Studio in Jacksonville, Florida. Cannon began tattooing after she met her husband, who is also a tattoo artist.

Judy Dibisceglia is the owner and main tattoo artist at American Ink Tattoo in West Palm Beach, Florida. “I really liked drawing, and one day my mom’s boyfriend, who is a biker, told me I should start tattooing people for a living, and so I took his advice and learned to tattoo,” said Dibisceglia. She has been tattooing for over eleven years.

Suzi “Tattuzi” Gann is a freelance tattoo artist, who has been tattooing for two years, and she is currently working out of Creative Bodies Tattoo Studio in Gainesville, Florida. Gann travels working in studios in Gainesville, Miami, and Los Angeles. “I started tattooing because my ex-boyfriend made me tattoo him, it was the first tattoo I ever did or thought of doing and it took me two hours to do a really small design, but I did it and it looked awesome,” said Gann.

Laura Saadeti began tattooing about seven years ago in San Francisco. Saadeti currently works at a small Inksmith and Rogers Tattoo Studio in Jacksonville, Florida, where she is the only tattoo artist in the studio. “I learned to tattoo in California, it is competitive out there, there are so many artists that you have to be really good,” said Saadeti.
