Gators of the Pool
There is no doubt that water polo is one of the most exciting sports to play, so if you want to experience the fun of playing water polo, come join the Florida Gators water polo club. We practice three times a week in the spring semester and four times a week during the fall. We have over 30 players divided into two teams: Florida A and Florida B.
Fall is when our season starts, so practices get intense where we start to swim more than usual and do more team plays and drills. We also do dry-lands (run stadiums) twice a week. In our season last year, we had a great start where we won all our games before regionals. We were ranked first in our conference and as high as seventh in the nation. We were pretty confident in winning the tournament and going to Nationals, but things didnít work out the way they were supposed to. We unexpectedly lost in our semi-final game and ended up with third place.
The results were very disappointing, but as a team we have learned from our mistakes and are looking forward to next season. We have a solid team this year, and we are determined to work hard and go all the way to Nationals. With Trinidadian sensation, Matthew George, in the set along with Florida native, Ryan Kamp, and the talented Italian, Mike DeRisi, our offense is looking stronger than ever. The speed of Patrick Topps, and the brilliance of the Kuwaiti driver, Eisa AL Nashmi, add more to our offense, and makes it tough to beat. Defense is looking great with Javier Sierra and Brent Moser guarding, and Jarrod Bonsmann blocking shots from the goal.
The spring semester is our off-season, so practices are usually more chill and entertaining. We get in, swim for a little bit, do some shooting drills and end up with a scrimmage or a five-alive contest. We participate in several friendly tournaments and we usually host our own, Spring in the Swamp, every March.
The Spring in the Swamp is a great tournament for us to get ready for season because we get to play good teams from all over the nation including teams from California and New York. This is the 14th year that we are hosting this tournament, and we are looking forward to redeem ourselves from our disappointing results last season. This year the tournament will be held on March 25 and 26 and twelve tough teams will be participating. It will be a great challenge for us, but with our home-pool advantage, we are more than ready to win and make our Gators fans proud.
