All about Ty and Zy

More than 1,000 premature babies are born every day in the United States. My godson, Tyrique was one of them.

At 7:05 a.m. Dec. 5, 1998, Ty was delivered by cesarean at 26 weeks. He weighed only 2 pounds, 1 ounce and was 19 inches long.

He was a 'miracle baby,' as some have called him. Not only did he survive his premature birth, but also according to doctors, his mother wasn’t even supposed to be able to be a mother.

For a child born at such an early stage of development, he had few problems. Mostly the doctors were concerned with his lung development and weight gain.

Ty was a patient in the neonatal intensive care unit in a Houston hospital until mid February 1999 and weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces when he finally went home.

He is now in pre-kindergarten and is the proud big brother of his sister, Zyanna. She is yet another 'miracle baby,' born 18 months after Ty.
