I like to collect quotes, here are a few favorites. "The sky would be blue, laundry would be airing at open windows; his hands in his pockets, he would wander about as a tourist among people whose language he didn't speak and whose troubles didn't concern him. He would let himself live, would feel himself living, and perhaps that alone would be enough to make everything come clear.-Simone De Beauvoir, The Madarins The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.-Gilbert K. Chesterton My favorite thing is to go where I've never been.-Diane Arbus A man walks down the street The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page.-Saint Augustine The gentle reader will never, never, know what a consummate ass he can become until he goes abroad. I speak now, of course, in the supposition that the gentle reader has not been abroad, and therefore is not already a consummate ass. If the case be otherwise, I beg his pardon and extend to him the cordial hand of fellowship and call him brother. -Mark Twain, Innocents Abroad I met a lot of people in Europe. I even encountered myself.-James Baldwin Every perfect traveler always creates the country where he travels. -Nikos Kazantzakis Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. -Mark Twain Innocents Abroad In Paris they simply stared when I spoke to them in French; I never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.-Mark Twain The man who goes out alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.-Henry David Thoreau A person needs at intervals to separate from family and companions and go to new places. One must go without familiars in order to be open to influences, to change.-Katharine Butler Hathaway It liberates the vandal to travel--you never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort and satisfaction. - Mark Twain, The American Abroad speech, 1868 I'm leaving on a jet plane, I don't know when I'll be back again.-Peter, Paul, and Mary Why am I always on a plane or a fast train? Oh what a world my parents gave me. Always travelling, but not in love...-Rufus Wainwright "Oh What a World" I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them. -Mark Twain If we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One's destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.-Henry Miller Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear.-Freya Stark Return to top. |
