Rising Sun: A summer in the Arctic
The Arctic icesheet is melting. Millions of tons of freshwater
released by global warming
is flowing south, smothering the warm waters of the
the Gulf Stream. Climatologists warn that without the Gulf Stream's
moderating influence, northern Europe's weather patterns could change dramatically.
In June 2002, I accompanied the research vessel Knorr
on its journey north to the Arctic Ocean to search for clues.
