My ability to support myself is something that I treasure. I work hard to keep my bills paid and food on the table. I work about 25 hours a week, mostly during the evenings.

I know the restuarant industry inside and out after waiting tables everywhere from hole-in-the-wall bars to upscale restaurants. I've served at Red Lobster for about a year and a half. And yes, if you ask me, I can get you cheddar bay biscuits.

Evenings are also the time where I exercise my passion for creative writing. I enjoy writing feature articles for class, but love to read and write poetry more than anything. On the right is a poem that I wrote a few years ago about life in college.

Thrown into this spin at a scramble,
Flailing as we walk collectedly by,
Vacant eyes unsure if they can meet the tasks at hand,
Determined feet on their way to try.

Scurrying along these un-carved paths,
Praying feverishly that they hold true,
Swallowing mouthfuls of water for every gasp of air,
Trying to get ahead, get above, get through.

The toll of another fifteen minutes sounds,
What have you done so far that day?
Safe high in its brick tower of security,
Enviously below it I walk away.

Smiles and sips of pleasure,
Buzzings of blissful sin and delight,
Taking moment after moment to get away,
Morphing into days and starstruck nights.

Are we really at this point in our lives?
Am I old enough to trust what I feel?
I’m only a child in a room of adults,
But the mirror tells me that this is all real.

In the morning the spiral starts again,
Pulling down and I’ll continue to fight,
But I’m rising above the vortex,
I just won’t think about it tonight.

Insecurities, oh, they are plentiful,
Outnumbered only by the mistakes that we make,
The journey has begun and we’re all on the search,
For belonging, answers, and a break.

Life is sprung and singing,
Shrieking for all of us to just try,
I laugh, take a drink and a smoke,
Hold on tighter, and soar high.
