My name is John Lockett. I am a junior at the University of Florida studying journalism. I come from a small town called Niceville located on the Emerald Coast of Florida's panhandle. It's a dull place with pretty sunsets. And, yes, the people from Niceville are quite nice.
Back home I have a mother, father and brother. I've also got a rambunctious little Labrador retriever named Mitzi. My mom is South Korean and my dad is half Scottish, so I'm pretty much a mutt. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
My family has lived all around the world, and we travel to far away places quite frequently. That's why I decided to pursue a career in journalism. I wanted a job where I could fly off to exotic locations and write about the people there. But it hasn't always been that way. I was originally a pre-med student before stumbling into the world of journalism. The transition was tough. Part of me felt like I was giving up on a great opportunity. I didn't want to come across as another pre-med failure to all the people who thought that one day I'd become a doctor. But medicine was not a passion of mine. I wanted to write, tell stories and take pictures. And that is what I'm doing.
I've been a stringer at The Independent Florida Alligator for the past two semesters taking photos and submitting the occasional story. However, I don't think print journalism is for me. Newspapers are miserable and on the decline. I'd like to work in broadcast. Broadcast encompasses so much. There's on-air stuff along with online material. From writing blogs to shooting stories, I want to do it all. I want to be the epitome of convergence. As embarrassing as it sounds, I want to be like my hero, Anderson Cooper. Working at CNN would be my dream job. We'll see what the future has in store for me.
