The fact that my passport is my most valuable possession probably says a lot about me. Every true travel junkie knows the expiration date of their passport and exactly how long it takes to renew it.
My first passport photo was taken sitting on my moms lap. I was wearing green overalls with penguins on them. My current photo is much worse. I look like a small, rain drenched, refugee from somewhere in Eastern Europe. The treasures inside are the collection of stamps. Looking through my passports takes me back to wherever I was when I watched the border patrol leave their mark with a loud "thud" of the stamp.
I recently discovered an awesome website called matador that you should check out if you are interested in traveling, travel writing and pretty much anything else pertaining to travel.

TRAVEL TIPS
- Girls should seriously think twice before traveling alone through a country. Check on the customs and culture of where you are going. Sometimes wearing a "wedding ring" can help deter unwanted male attention.
- Pack light. You can always buy an extra T-shirt or pair of underwear while you are traveling.
- Before you leave you should make sure to check vaccination recommendations for where you are headed. Do this in advance because certain vaccines need a month or two to complete.
- Snag free toiletries from hotels when at all possible and always ask for sewing kits and dental floss... you never know when you'll need a needles and thread.
- Travel with an up to date copy of your favorite guide book. The maps are usually pretty worthless, but I've found great food, sites, and hostels while using them.
- Eat where the locals are. Try new food and always ask your waitress or waiter for their recommendations.
- Learn a few words of the language. Hello. Thank You. Bathroom. I'd like a drink. It will get you far.
- Most importantly! Always be open to change. Sometimes the best part of a trip the part that you didn't plan. Ask other travelers for suggestions on where to go. You'll discover awesome new places and make new friends!
