What are Ben's Opinions?

Politics

Symbol of Democratic Party

I am a registered Democrat and consider my political views generally leaning to the left of the political spectrum. I believe that the government should provide better services rather than just giving hand outs. For example, I believe we should abandon the welfare system and put that money towards low-cost daycare so that working single moms can afford to have someone look after their children.

Movies

There is no particular genre of film that I am fond of, I enjoy all kinds of movies from action/adventure, dramas, comedies, etc. I try to appreciate what the director of a movie is trying to accomplish. For instance, two of my favorite movies are "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Goodfellas". One movie is full of optimism and traditional values and the other is about the life of a Mobster who steals and kills, they are completely different films. What these movies have in common is that they have compelling stories of the human condition and show the consequences of our actions, whether they be moral or not. The George Bailey character is shown a world where he does not exist and the world is worse off, whereas Ray Liotta's character leads a life of infidelity, theft, and drugs and eventually it all comes crashing down on him.

The kind of movies that I cannot stand are ones where the storyline is just replicated from so many other films, usually slasher films and "chick flicks" tend to fall into this category. With regard to slasher films, they tend to not even attempt to divulge into the backstory of the characters so that the audience could care less when the characters are slaughtered. In fact, sometimes the audiences cheer when the relatively innocent victims are murdered. When it comes to "chick flicks", it just seems to me that it is nothing more than a re-hashing of the same story over and over again.
