Skills and Work Experience
Versatility is paramount in today's ever-changing market. Those who strive for excellence will achieve it, and doing anything less never made but little sense to me.
My professional activities include writing for INsite Magazine, Gainesville's foremost entertainment periodical. I established and solely write the magazine's Gainesville Date column. I also freelance for Gainesville newspapers such as the campus edition of The Gainesville Sun. Other strong suits include culinary journalism, recipes, restaurant reviews, personality profiles and coverage of local trends.
I also hold the position of Assistant Director for UF's Shakespeare in the Park theater troupe. Actors rely on me and my fellow directors to provide leadership and to navigate Shakespeare's difficult language. Extensive acting experience has melted whatever trace of shyness I once had, and I enjoy making wide circles of friends and colleagues with ease.
Before I switched to journalism, I dabbled in anthropology and loved it.
Before I unofficially switched to - and got an outside concentration in - anthropology, I aspired to graduate an English major.
Whatever my focus, I have always sought to improve and diversify my writing. Thus, I took classes spanning several writing media, including:
- blogging (RTV 3280: Interactive Media)
- fiction (CRW 1101, 3110: Beginning, Advanced Fiction Writing)
- creative nonfiction (ENC 3310: Advanced Exposition)
- journalism (JOU 1100: Intro to Journalism, JOU 3101: Reporting)
- mass communication
(MMC 2100: Intro to Mass Comm., MMC 3260: Comm. on the Internet) - speechwriting (SPC 3605: Speechwriting)
- screenwriting (ENG 4133: Screenwriting)
I won first place in fiction writing for the 2008 Florida Collegiate Honors Council Writing Contest. When I have spare time, I continue to write fiction.
I also began a blog, The Language Loft, in the summer of 2009.
"The Loft," as I like to call it, discusses wordplay, etymology and idioms.
I have temporarily suspended my activity on the blog but plan to resume it (once I finish Reporting).
