What Does Kat Enjoy?

Dancing

One of my absolute favorite things to do is dance. It's almost impossible for me not to dance, or at least shake my hips around, when I hear a good beat. And when a song doesn't have a good beat, I absolutely detest it, because bland is boring.

It doesn't matter where I am; the fitting room at work, my car, the middle of the sidewalk, the club; I'm going to dance.

I love hearing about new ways to dance. There are dances emerging all over the world, all the time. My two personal favorites at the moment are "Daggering," an ultra dirty style of dancing coming out of Kingston, Jamaica, and "Tektonic," a white-kid version of breakdancing straight out of the electronic clubs of Paris, France.

Record Collecting

I started collecting records during my sophmore year in college. My boyfriend at the time bought himself a new record player, and gave me his old one. It was a little beat up, but it came with speakers, so who can complain!

I immediately began building my record collection. Tallahassee happens to be home to a wonderful record store called Vinyl Fever, and I was lucky, because it was practically across the street from my old home there. I'm sure I've spent hours sifting though their extensive collection of new and used vinyl.

Some of my most treasured pieces:

Ratatat - Classics Joy Division - Closer Dager - 09/16 2007 Radiohead - In Rainbows The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

All great listens.

Reading

Ever since I learned how, I've been a huge fan of reading.

I really enjoy reading outside, in natural light, listening to the sounds of birds singing, the wind rustling through the trees. It creates such a relaxing environment, so comfortable.

My favorite book of all time is 1984 by George Orwell. I've read that book twice already, and I'm sure I'll read it again in the future. Currently, I'm reading two books for pleasure (not an easy thing to accomplish while enrolled in 12 credit hours). At the beginning of Summer I started Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, author of The Virgin Suicides, which I have also read and enjoyed. I'm also in the middle of Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert A. Heinlein, a curious sci-fi novel about a man, born on Mars and brought back to Earth to be studied. I've been told it was a major influence on the free-love movement of the '60s.
