Attending college has kicked the door open to many travel opportunities. I've journeyed though nine countries in Western Europe by train, plane and taxi in four weeks. I spent more than a month living in Rome to absorb the culture and tune my language skills. Still, I have yet to explore many places in the U.S, and there are many more countries I hope to hop to during my life.

Italy...and beyond!

My cultural taste test of Europe was fast-paced and beautiful. Beginning in France and ending in Switzerland, the frequent mix of modernity and antiquity was astounding. Attending free tours hosted by hostels I stayed in, and using my Let’s Go travel book helped make the most of my short stays. Natural wonders in each country captivated me. Tulip fields near Amsterdam, rocky crags in Scotland, the deep aqua of the Mediterranean are just a few of the bold strokes that make up my memory collage of that trip.

Backpacking Tips

• Book in advance
I used companies such as STA Travel to book crowded hostel rooms in advance. The hostels came recommended by the company and with a discount to boot.
• Carry less than 50 pounds
Whether you're running to catch your train or checking your pack on a small plane, less is better. Pack outfits you can wear many times and leave room for souvenirs.
• Buy a backpack that fits
Don't borrow the pack dad used during his days as a boyscout. Find a backpack that fits your body. For smaller women, I recommend Gregory's Deva 60. Your back will thank you.
